“An Unlikely Mystic, Etty Hillesum - How Her Journey Illumines our Lenten Journey”
Pat Farrell, OP, a Dominican Sister of San Rafael, is the hosting manager of Santa Sabina Center. She is a trained mediation teacher, spiritual director and retreat leader, and has served in her congregational leadership, including as Executive Director of the Dominican Sisters Conference. She is a member of Sophia Zen Sangha and enjoys sharing how Zen and Christianity complement each other. Sister Pat will lead us through an exploration of the life of Etty Hillesum, a young Dutch Jewish woman who was born in 1914 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1943. Though she wasn’t raised in a religious family, her diary and letters reveal a woman of deep spirituality who expressed both her very human love life, as well as her love of her very tangible God within. As we begin our Lenten journey, perhaps Hillesum can provide an inspiration for us as we experience these unsettling times.
